- Tibetetan education for Tibetan children in Nepal. Antahkarana Society is sponsoring twenty eight Tibetan children into Namgyal Elementary School in Kathmandu, Nepal for the 2008 school year. The number of children is expected to increase by this amount each year and thousands more await in the remote Himalyan regions for their opportunity. Namgyal school is part of the Tibetan Government in Exile Minestry of Education. The children's Tibetan heritage and culture will be nourished and preserved. Annual cost for tuition, books, supplies, uniforms and medical expenses and hostel care during school vacations for each child is $500. Please help!
- Limi Youth Hostel, Boudha, Kathmandu, Nepal. Elementary aged Tibetan children will be cared for in a home-like setting during school vacations and special holidays. At other times, Tibetan youth beyond school age will be provided opportunities to learn to read and write Tibetan, Nepali, English and basic computer skills. They will also be offered additional job skills and leadership training. A donation to the general fund will help keep the hostel in operation and allow us to expand and improve our services to Tibetan children and youth.
- Women's Literacy Project. Tibetan women are learning to read and writeTibetan and English at the Limi Youth Hostel.
- Simikot project: Our most recent visit has identified the need for a large school in the Simikot area and we are working on this proposal. Simikot is a much friendlier environment at a lower altitude. The demographics indicate the presence of thousands of young Tibetans without adequate schools.
- Limi Youth are training to go to villages to teach primary grades childresn.
- Young monks also need our sponsorship to continue their academic studies.
- We continue to work in the villages to improve living conditions and develop economic opportunities for the villagers that will allow them to rise above bare subsistence living.
- The school construction project in Limi is currently on hold. We have shifted our focus to providing educational opportunies for Limi children in Tibetan Government in Exile Schools located in Kathmandu.
- Our mission remains the same. That is, to preserve the Tibetan culture of this very remote region. Our decision to delay school construction is based on the information we mined from visits to the region and current political conditions. We have also determined that hiring motivated teachers and administrators to staff a school in such a remote area under such extreme conditions is not likely.
- Therefore, we have made the decision to educate the youth of Limi and encourage them to take up these postions when the time is right to build a school in the region. Already we are sending youth to the villages to prepare the young children in the primary grades and to keep them in the villages until they reach age 12.
